How many times have you sat there at your home computer, thinking that the majority of things you print just don't need to be printed in thousands of eye-popping colors on your expensive inkjet? What? You didn't know inkjets were expensive? Well, when you factor in the cost of ink, they certainly are. Most inkjet printers cost (depending on the brand, size of print, etc.) between 20¢ and 35¢ per sheet JUST FOR THE INK. That's why you keep having to go back to the store to get new ink cartridges.
By contrast, for most of us in the "home user" or "home office" category, laser printers seem big, bulky, expensive, and something used primarily by much larger offices. And, to some extent, that's true. However, the cost of laser printers is primarily upfront. They are indeed more expensive to purchase - by a factor of several times - than most inkjets. But when it comes to ink - or in the case of laser printers, toner, you get a whole lot for your money. So much so, in fact, that monochrome laser printing reliably runs about 2-3¢ per sheet. That's a lot of cost difference between that and 30¢ per sheet.
Enter the Samsung SCX-4521F. Think about it for a moment....what do you spend the bulk of your time printing? Client brochures from Publisher on glossy photo paper? Or yahoo maps, business letters, memos and other internal stuff which doesn't require high quality photo printing or even color? If you're like me, or like a lot of people in the "home" realm, you answered the latter. With that in mind, the SCX-4521F is about as useful a printer as you're likely to find. It has scan, copy AND fax features built right into it, as well as the traditional printing features. So you really do have it all in one device. The print quality is typical laser-great. Not as good, perhaps, as the best high-end HPs, but then again, you didn't pay a thousand dollars for it, did you? I got it at on sale with a $50 instant rebate and another $50 mail-in rebate, making my total cost $150 plus tax. For a laser printer. Hard to beat that. And if you're used to the merely ho-hum job that most inkjet printers do on black text, prepare to be reminded of the upside of lasers all over again. That crisp, ultra-black text that is difficult if not impossible to see the edges of, even down into the 5 or 6-point type range. Awesome! Even at the list price of $250, you won't be disappointed. This little baby puts an awful lot of flexibility into a reasonably compact footprint with quality ranging from pretty good to excellent, depending upon which feature you're talking about.
One of the highlights for a fax/scanner at this price point is the presence of the ADF - automatic document feeder. That's a real plus if you've ever had to stand over a copier without one and hand-feed in page after page of a document you need copied. And it's worse if you're trying to fax. But with the SCX-4521F, you just load them into the ADF, set your options, hit "start" and walk away.
The only downsides of this unit I've noticed so far are that the scans seem to be merely OK in quality. However, again, we live in the digital age where serious photographic chores often never see print media until the very final stage anyway. If you're like me, you have less and less use for a scanner, and no real use for a super-high quality one anymore. The scanner in the SCX-4521F is adequate for all real world (read: non-critical photo) applications. The other downside is that some of the plastic housing parts seem a bit flimsy, especially the pull-out tab which supports sheets after they've been printed. Some of the plastic on the SCX-4521F feels somewhat thin, but again, I'm surprised they could do all this for $250 list.
Overall, HIGHLY recommended. I use this for 80-90% of my daily printing needs, and keep my expensive photo printer (and its expensive ink) in reserve for when I really need it.
